Fall is settling in on us now. Colder temperatures and shorter days mean colder water in the canyons. North Wash Outfitters has moved locations to the town of Blanding Utah. We appreciate you continued support of us and our company as we strive to always improve our stock and our service. This move brings us closer to the Colorado Plateau canyons as well as improvements in our shipping services on orders. We look forward to working with our many loyal customers and reaching out to new ones. Thank you for your support.
This season has seen some great new products come into the canyoneering industry. One of these products is from Imlay Canyon Gear in the way of some new ropes, "The Canyon Fire." It's easy to see why it is called "Fire" just by looking at it. These ropes are going to be more durable and abrasion resistant which is perfect for anyone doing canyons in the sandstone regions of the South West U.S. On top of that, these new ropes are going to look spectacular in those photos you take.
Wouldn't it be great to attack that new Canyon Fire rope with a new rappel device. We have it. The Totem is here. The first of it's kind, multi-function rappel / rigging device is here. Designed by a Canyoneer for more than just Canyoneers. Check it out to see what this device can do and then let us know if find something that it can't do.
For those just getting started, or those who don't quite get the chance to get out as often as they would like there is a great way to keep reviewing your skills in the off time so that you can be prepared. Pick up a copy of Dave Black's Book "Canyoneering" which is Now in Stock. This is a great read with lots of technical tips and how to's.
Some of you who visit on a regular basis are probably tired of us always talking about the SPOT Satellite Messenger. Well, Sorry! We are going to forever encourage you to look at the SPOT Satellite Messenger. (Price on SPOT Reduced to move remaining overstock. Price only good on current pieces in stock!!) My wife and I have enjoyed using ours to keep track of me when I am in the outdoors. I have sent it with my wife when she leaves out of town, and have taken mine on road trips to the city. Here's a scenario for you to consider. On 5-8-09 our county SAR team was called out for an overdue party on an ATV. This gentelman has cell phone coverage and is talking to dispatchers, but doesn't know where he is. He has a type of a GPS unit, but it only tells him how far he is from a road. After 5 hrs. of searching into the early morning hrs. SAR starts contemplating closing down for the night and picking it up again in the morning. This leaves this man to spend a night on his ATV (well he has already spent 1/2 of it there anyway.) Ok, here it is in a nutshell, IF THEY CAN'T LOCATE YOU, THEY CAN'T HELP YOU!! SPOT sends your location to family, friends etc. and even gives them a Google map to follow right to where you are sitting, it doesn't get any easier than that. It offers peace of mind by allowing you to check in periodically during trips, and allowing others to know when you are safely out of the canyon(s). Wives can track their husbands, moms can check on kids, or friends can keep up with friends to ensure everyone is safe and located. New to SPOT this year they have added Roadside Assistance. It is no longer just for the outdoor adventurer. Take it out of your pack and put it in your glove box as well. Check out our Blog for more information.
Ok, so you haven't made that leap into getting a SPOT yet, well settle in, it may be a while before SAR finds you and we have a few items that hopefully make that wait a little more pleasant. With our preparedness campaign, we have added some new survival tools from Ultimate Survival Technologies. Check out our First Aid and Emergency Category to see these three great products. Canyoneering is certainly wet at times and if we find ourselves with the need to start a fire, it can be difficult with all the water around. These tools work great to get the job done. Check out the BlastMatch, WetFire, and the Deluxe Survival Kit. Going to get hungry while waiting, better make sure to have some food and water on hand. We have water bottles and energy snacks to keep your calories up.
Now that the weather is getting warmer many people will be turning towards the canyons. There will be fewer cold spots, but some of those canyons can still get pretty chilly and hypothermia is still a threat, even in the hottest summer months. It is a great time to visit the canyons, but make sure the memories will be good ones, and not ones filled with shivering moments. The only addition is the need for some thermal protection, and with as much water as there is potential to be in the canyons this time of year, another great item to look at is a HyperFlex wet suit. HyperFlex wet suits are constructed with a looser fit than dive suits to allow the canyoneer to move more freely. It has sealed seams to keep the warm water in and the colder water out.
